If you're an Octopus Energy customer with a Home Mini, you can now take your energy monitoring to the next level by integrating it directly with Home Assistant.
This lets you:
- See real-time usage inside your energy dashboard
- Create smart automations based on actual electricity and gas consumption
- Track your usage and costs alongside the rest of your smart home devices
The best part? It’s easy to set up using the official Octopus Energy integration via HACS.
✅ What You’ll Need
- An active Octopus Energy account
- An installed and working Octopus Home Mini
- A running Home Assistant instance (e.g. on Raspberry Pi, NAS, etc.)
- HACS (Home Assistant Community Store) installed
🔧 Step-by-Step: Installing the Octopus Energy Integration with Home Mini Support
✅ One Click Install ✅
Manual Install:
- Open Home Assistant
- Go to HACS > Integrations
- Click the three-dot menu and choose Custom Repositories
- Paste in the URL:
https://my.home-assistant.io/redirect/hacs_repository/?owner=BottlecapDave&repository=homeassistant-octopusenergy&category=integration - Click Download
- Restart Home Assistant
Once installed, go to Settings > Devices & Services and add the Octopus Energy integration. When prompted:
✅ Make sure to tick the box that says “I have a Home Mini”
This enables the extra entities that the Home Mini unlocks.
📊 What You’ll Get
Once the Home Mini is enabled in the integration, you’ll gain access to:
- Real-time electricity usage entities
- Live gas consumption data (updated every 30 minutes)
- Cost tracking for electricity and gas
- Entities you can add directly to your Home Assistant Energy dashboard
This makes it easy to:
- Visualise your usage alongside solar, EV charging, and other devices
- Create energy-based automations (e.g. turn off devices when usage spikes)
- Track daily, weekly, and monthly usage in kWh and £
🔍 More Accurate Gas Cost Calculations
The integration allows for gas cost calculation using calorific values.
By default, the value is set to 40. However, this can vary depending on your region.
✅ You can find your actual calorific value on your latest gas bill and update it in the integration settings for more accurate tracking if your meter reports in cubic metres (m³).
⚡ Why It’s Worth Doing
Combining the Octopus Home Mini with Home Assistant gives you one of the most powerful home energy monitoring setups available in the UK:
- Free real-time tracking
- Works with any Octopus tariff, including Go and Intelligent Go
- Integrates with smart automations, dashboards, and energy-saving routines

💡 My Home Mini Has Been Running in Home Assistant for Around a Year
I set up this exact integration on my own Home Assistant instance and it was running in about five minutes. The Home Mini had already been connected and working for around a year before I added the HA integration. Having the energy data alongside my solar panel output and Tesla charging in one dashboard makes it genuinely useful. I can watch the Intelligent Octopus Go rate kick in overnight, see the car start charging, and time the dishwasher and washing machine to run at the same time. The tick-box for “I have a Home Mini” during setup is the step most people miss, and it unlocks all the extra entities.
