Octopus Home Mini vs In-Home Display: Which Suits You?

In a rush? Choose the Home Mini if you prefer checking usage on your phone. Keep the in-home display if you want a screen anyone at home can glance at without opening an app. You can use both.
I have both devices, but the Home Mini data in the Octopus app is what I use most. That does not make the separate screen useless: it may suit someone else in your household better.
What is the difference?

Octopus offers the Mini free to customers, subject to availability and a compatible meter connection. Request it through Octopus; a referral signup is not a Home Mini request.
What can you see in the app?
The Mini sends electricity readings about every ten seconds. Under Usage, Live shows electricity use; Day includes gas and electricity. Gas readings arrive every 30 minutes, so you will not see an instant gas spike as you do with a kettle's electricity use.
Try switching on one appliance while watching the graph, then compare the change. It helps you understand its contribution to total use, but the meter is not identifying the appliance for you.
What do you need for setup?
You need a meter Octopus can connect to, continuous power, a 2.4GHz Wi-Fi network and the Octopus app. Turn on Bluetooth for setup and follow the QR-code instructions. Place the Mini close enough to the meter and router to connect to both.
Allow up to an hour for live readings to appear. If it stays green, follow Octopus's troubleshooting guide rather than resetting it repeatedly.
When would I keep the in-home display?
If you like a quick glance while cooking or want everyone at home to see usage, keep the screen plugged in. It does not need internet. Features and history vary by model, so I would check your own display's guide before writing it off.
On a smart tariff, a cost estimate on a display may not match your bill. Octopus explains that IHDs can struggle with dynamic prices. Compare usage in kWh and check your account for billing; neither display is a guarantee of the final charge.
Does the Home Mini show solar generation?
It can show live export on supported meters, but Octopus lists exceptions for Aclara and Honeywell/Elster meters. Export is electricity sent to the grid, not total solar generation. Use your inverter's data if you want the generation figure.
What I find useful
My IHD has ended up in a kitchen drawer, while I look at the app when the car starts charging or the oven goes on. Unexpected usage is the thing that makes me investigate. A high reading tells me to check what is running; it does not tell me that an appliance is faulty.
Will it work with Intelligent Octopus Go?
The Mini helps you see usage while your car charges. It does not choose your tariff or prove a session qualified for a cheap rate. Check the Octopus schedule and bill alongside the graph.
Should you switch supplier for one?
I would compare the energy quote first and treat the Mini as a useful extra. If you already use Octopus, request it directly rather than going through a new-customer referral.
