Octopus Energy Referral Link 2026: £50 Credit Explained

Last updated: 2 October 2026

In a rush? For an eligible home-energy switch, Octopus offers £50 bill credit to you and the person referring you. Compare the tariff first: a good ongoing price matters more than a one-off credit.

The buttons use my Octopus referral link. I can receive credit too when a switch qualifies. The £50 is energy-account credit, rather than an immediate cash payment or a discount on every bill.

How to get the £50 credit

  1. Open the referral link before signing up.
  2. Get a quote using your address and energy usage.
  3. Compare unit rates, standing charges and contract terms with your current tariff.
  4. Complete the eligible switch through the referral route and keep the confirmation.

Octopus says it adds the credit after the new customer is on supply and the first month's Direct Debit has succeeded. Allow a few weeks, with longer waits possible if the switch is delayed. Check your account balance history for the credit. Octopus explains eligibility and timing here.

What I would compare before switching

  • Annual cost: use your actual consumption, including both fuels if relevant.
  • Standing charges: these still matter even when a unit rate looks attractive.
  • Exit fees: check your existing contract and the new quote.
  • EV compatibility: if you want Intelligent Octopus Go, check your car or charger with Octopus before relying on that tariff.

For example, £50 credit would not cover an ongoing £10-a-month difference for a year. I would choose the tariff that fits my home, then treat the referral as an extra.

Switching for EV charging

Read the current quote rather than copying the overnight rate from an older review. My Intelligent Octopus Go rate guide explains how to compare the cheap period with daytime usage. Compatibility and smart-tariff setup are separate from the home-energy referral.

My experience with Octopus

I switched when I bought my Tesla and needed an EV tariff. The tariff was the reason for switching; the referral credit was a welcome extra. I have had good experiences with support through the app and by phone, but that is my experience rather than a promise about every customer's service.

Common questions

Can I use this if I am already an Octopus customer?

The new-customer credit is for an eligible switch. Existing customers can share their own referral link; if you already use Octopus, compare tariffs through your account instead of signing up again for a bonus.

Does the £50 guarantee a particular tariff?

No. Check the tariff and referral conditions shown for your account. A referral does not establish EV compatibility or guarantee a particular electricity rate.

What if the credit does not appear?

First check that the switch is complete and the first Direct Debit has succeeded. Then check your balance history and contact Octopus with your signup details if the credit remains missing.
