Intelligent Octopus Go is the UK’s most popular EV tariff – and for good reason. Smart charging tech and ultra-cheap overnight rates can slash your electricity bill and optimise your whole home’s energy use.
⚡ What Is Intelligent Octopus Go?
Intelligent Octopus Go is a smart EV tariff from Octopus Energy that charges your electric vehicle at the cheapest, greenest times – while also giving you 6 hours of ultra-cheap electricity every night for your entire home.
Once your EV or home charger is connected via the Octopus app, you just plug in your car and let their smart scheduling do the rest. You’ll pay just 7p per kWh – no matter when they choose to charge.

💷 How Much Can You Save?
According to Octopus and independent research, the average EV driver switching to Intelligent Octopus Go could save up to £431 per year. Higher mileage drivers could save even more – £780+ annually if driving over 12,000 miles.
Compared to public charging rates (53p/kWh), you’ll save around 87% by charging at home with Intelligent Octopus Go at just 7p/kWh.
⚙️ How It Works
- Download the Octopus app and switch to Intelligent Octopus Go
- Pair your EV or smart charger (280+ supported models)
- Set your required charge level and “ready by” time
- Plug in your car and let Octopus handle the rest
💡 My Favourite Hack: Use a Slow Charger to Get Even More Cheap Energy
If you use a slower EV charger like the 2.5kW Tesla granny charger, your car takes longer to charge – which means Octopus is more likely to give you extra hours of the 7p/kWh rate.
This trick can also unlock smart charging sessions outside the usual 11:30pm-5:30am window – including early evenings or afternoons. Since the entire house benefits from the cheap rate, it’s the perfect time to run your washing machine, dishwasher, or charge your devices – all at 7p/kWh instead of 29p!
🔐 Is It Safe for Your Battery?
Yes. Intelligent charging doesn’t harm your EV battery. It works just like regular charging – with no impact on long-term health or your warranty.
🚗 Compatible EVs & Chargers
Intelligent Octopus Go supports over 280 EV models and selected smart chargers. Even if you use a basic 3-pin charger like the Tesla 2.5kW mains unit, you can still benefit from full smart scheduling and low rates.
📱 Full Control in the Octopus App
You can monitor usage, track savings, and reschedule charging at any time in the Octopus app. You’ll see when your charge is planned, how much you’re using, and can override with a tap if needed.
🧠 Final Thoughts
If you drive an EV and aren’t using a smart tariff like Intelligent Octopus Go, you’re leaving serious savings on the table. Combine it with smart usage at home during off-peak hours, and you can slash your energy bills even further.
💡 From a 25mpg Audi Q7 Diesel to Charging at Home for £20 a Month
I switched to Intelligent Octopus Go after picking up my 2021 Tesla Model 3 Long Range Dual Motor in April 2026 and was set up and charging the next day. The slow granny charger trick in this post is something I use personally. Running the official Tesla granny cable at 2.5kW gives me longer cheap-rate windows that often stretch into the afternoon, so I run the dishwasher and washing machine at the same time. I average around 300kWh a month and pay roughly £20 for it. Before the Tesla I was running an Audi Q7 4.2L diesel at about 25mpg with an £800 annual road tax bill. I've had 3 people use my referral link and every payout landed as a bill credit without any chasing.
