Temporary Car Insurance to Drive a New Car Home

Last Updated: July 29, 2026

In a rush? You need insurance before driving a newly bought car home. Cuvva can provide temporary comprehensive cover from one hour, so you can insure the car in the app and start the policy when you are ready to collect it.

Buying the car is exciting. Working out how you are legally going to drive it home is the less interesting part. You cannot rely on the seller's insurance, and owning another insured car does not automatically mean you have suitable cover for the one you have just bought.

Temporary car insurance is a simple answer when you need enough time to collect the car and get it home. Cuvva lets you arrange the policy on your phone without committing to a full year before you have even left the seller's driveway.

Can you insure a car just to drive it home?

Yes. Drive-away insurance is short-term cover for the gap between buying a car and arranging whatever insurance you want to use afterwards. A policy can last for hours, days or weeks depending on the provider.

Cuvva's temporary car policies start at one hour and can run for up to 28 days. The cover is comprehensive, and you can extend it in the app if the collection takes longer than expected.

What to do before collecting the car

Get the registration number from the seller before you travel. You will also need your driving licence details and the time you expect to take ownership. It is worth getting a quote before setting off because not every driver or car will be accepted.

Check the car is taxed, roadworthy and has a valid MOT where one is required. Insurance does not make an untaxed or unsafe car legal to drive.

I would also leave some spare time on the policy. Collections can run late, paperwork takes longer than expected and the first journey often includes a fuel or charging stop. Saving a few pounds by making the cover uncomfortably tight is not worth the rush.

How to use Cuvva when driving a car home

  1. Open Cuvva through my referral link and create your account.
  2. Enter the car's registration and your driver details.
  3. Choose a start time after you expect the purchase to be complete.
  4. Select enough time to cover the full journey with a sensible margin.
  5. Pay in the app and wait for the policy documents before driving away.

Your cover starts at the time shown on the policy. Do not start driving because payment has left your account while the policy is still set to begin later.

Who can get temporary cover from Cuvva?

Cuvva generally covers car drivers aged 19 to 70 who have held a full licence for at least six months. The exact decision also depends on the car, its value, insurance group and your driving history.

The app gives you the useful answer: whether Cuvva can quote for you and that particular car. Check this before agreeing a collection time, especially if you are a newer driver or buying a powerful, valuable, modified or unusual vehicle.

Does the seller's insurance cover the buyer?

Usually not. The seller's policy covers the people named or otherwise permitted by that policy. It does not transfer to you because you have paid for the car.

You should arrange your own cover and make sure it has started before moving the vehicle. The same applies if the seller says it is only a short drive home.

Can your existing policy cover the new car?

Some annual policies include driving-other-cars cover, but that wording is often restricted and may only provide third-party protection. It may also stop applying once you own the other car.

Do not assume the line appears on your policy. Check it with your insurer if you intend to rely on it. A separate temporary policy is clearer because the certificate identifies the new car and the exact period of cover.

Can you tax a car using temporary insurance?

Cuvva says temporary cover can be used when taxing a car, although the Motor Insurance Database can take time to update. Your policy documents prove when your insurance begins, but the tax service may not see a new policy immediately.

If possible, sort the tax and insurance before arriving. That avoids standing outside the seller's house waiting for different systems to catch up.

How long should the policy last?

For a nearby collection, a few hours may be enough. Allow for the handover, traffic and any stop you need on the way. If you are travelling across the country, a full day removes pressure and gives you room for delays.

Temporary cover is not a reason to postpone annual insurance indefinitely. Once the short policy ends, the car still needs suitable ongoing insurance unless it is declared off road and kept accordingly.

What if the collection falls through?

Get the quote early, but choose the policy start carefully. Cars can be misdescribed, sellers can change their minds and a test drive can reveal a problem. Read the cancellation terms before paying if there is any doubt about the purchase.

If the deal is not complete, do not drive the car away simply because you have bought temporary insurance for it. Insurance does not prove ownership or replace the sale paperwork.

Is Cuvva a good fit for driving a car home?

Cuvva makes sense when you need cover quickly and only for the collection. The app shows the quote before you commit, policies can begin from one hour and the documents arrive digitally.

The price is personal, so I would not promise that it will be cheap for every car or driver. Its main advantage here is convenience. You can arrange a clearly defined policy for the vehicle you are about to collect rather than trying to stretch another policy beyond what it covers.

Frequently asked questions

Can I get insurance for only one hour?

Cuvva offers temporary car insurance from one hour. Make sure the period covers the handover, the journey and some spare time for delays.

Does temporary insurance start immediately?

You choose the start time. Cover only applies from the time shown on the policy documents, so check it before moving the car.

Will the policy appear on askMID straight away?

Not necessarily. Database updates can take time. Keep the digital policy documents available because they show the insured vehicle and start time.

Can I arrange the policy before collection day?

Yes. You can get a quote and book cover in advance. Confirm the purchase is going ahead and check all the vehicle details before paying.

Can I use Cuvva for the test drive too?

Cuvva can also provide temporary cover for a test drive if you and the car qualify. Arrange that policy before driving the seller's car.
